Local winners of the Fleet Reserve Associationís 2007 essay contest, ìWhy I am proud to be an Americanî, received their awards during Low Country Branch 269ís business meeting held Feb. 21.
American-Patriotism chairman Larry Cox presented each winner with a certificate in front of members, proud parents and teachers.
In addition, first place winners were awarded a $200 series I U.S. Savings Bond, second place received a $100 series I U.S. Savings Bond, third place winners were awarded a $75 Bond, with an overall winner receiving a $500 series I Savings Bond.

Third Place ññ Lauren Feltner, 12th grade, Northwood Academy; Sean Bell, 8th grade, Gregg Middle; Nate Hill, 7th grade, Gregg Middle
First place winners in each grade level will have their essay submitted to the Southeast Region of the FRA for competition between area braches. The first place winners from each of the nine regions will then be submitted to the FRA National Committee on American-Patriotism. The contest includes a Grand National Prize of a $15,000.00 U.S. Savings Bond, with $5,000.00, $3,000.00 and $2,000.00 Savings Bond awarded to the first, second and third place winners on the National level in each grade category. Awards are presented by the end of May.
