The Swamp Foxes advanced to the semi-finals of the Ashley Ridge Invitational volleyball tournament, but it was West Ashley and Myrtle Beach that competed for the championship.
Ashley Ridge hosted eight other teams during the tournament Sept. 10. Myrtle Beach claimed the championship trophy with a 25-14, 25-18 win over the Wildcats. In the Junior Varsity division, the Swamp Foxes won the championship match.
“I think overall it was a competitive tournament,” Ashley Ridge coach Chi-Chi Hurley said. “I’m pleased with the turnout.”
Other participants included Fort Dorchester, Whale Branch, Branchville, Cane Bay, Colleton County and the Charleston School of Math and Science.
Ashley Ridge was 7-3 in the tournament. The Foxes were eliminated in the bracket play semi-finals with a 25-23, 25-17 loss to West Ashley.
“In the games we lost, we let them get ahead and kind of take over, but we played a lot better today than we did Thursday,” Hurley said. “I have a hodgepodge team and we have to work on some of the errors we made today, but overall I was pleased with their effort. We had eight girls graduate last year so that left about six varsity players. We had some players come up from the JV and we had some transfer students from Pinewood, Summerville, a Christian school and a school in Tennessee. They don’t know each other that well but I think they are the type of team that once they get used to playing together things will come along.”
Ashley Ridge has a 1-3 record in regular-season matches. The Foxes are 1-2 in region play as they defeated Colleton County, but fell to Beaufort and Summerville.
