The Fort Dorchester boysí basketball team's attempt to sweep three consecutive games from West Ashley came up short Friday night.

After defeating the Wildcats for the West Ashley Tournament Championship in November and beating them at the Fort in January, the Patriots were unable to overcome the Wildcatsí hot shooting Friday and fell 84-73 in West Ashley. The Patriots trailed by only 6 at the half, 38-32, but started poorly in the second half as foul trouble eliminated their inside attack. The Patriots could get no closer than 10 in the fourth quarter, but fought to the end.

"We could have very easily given up on this one, but our student-athletes decided to make a comeback and nearly succeeded,î Patriot coach Gregg Gierke said.

Mike Matthews and Marcus Thornton both had 19 points for the Patriots. Galen

Bennett had 15 and Tim Budd managed a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Matt Kennedy led West Ashley with 27 points and Kevin Bruce added 25. The Patriots are now 15-7 and 4-4, while West Ashley moved to 14-8 and 4-4.

The Fort girls dropped their second game of the season to West Ashley. The Wildcat defense minimized the impact of the Fortís top guns as West Ashley downed the Patriots 63-38. West Ashley improved to 13-6, 6-2 while the Fort fell to 6-12, 1-7.

Bridget Barnett led the Patriots with 13 points while Monet Scott added 8 and Karleen Paulin 6. Chentiah Ladson led the Wildcats with 20 points while Nodia Robinson added 15.

The Patriots host Summerville Friday.
