The price to park in Summervilleís new parking garage for this yearís Flowertown Festival will be $10, a Town Council committee decided Monday morning.

The townís Finance Committee passed the motion at the recommendation of staff.

Town Administrator Dennis Pieper said the funding is needed for maintenance during what is being projected as a high-use weekend. The proposal could be passed by Town Council when they accept the committeeís minutes at tonightís monthly meeting in Town Hall.

ìAll we collect is going to offset all the maintenance,î Pieper said. ìOnce [Council] decides on the fee then we can come up with a plan to implement it.î

The Flowertown Festival, scheduled for April 4-6 in and around Azalea Park, is sponsored by the Summerville Family YMCA.

The annual event is listed as a must-attend in nationwide travel guides, and it is estimated the event draws more than a quarter of a million visitors each year.

The fee will be a $10 flat fee, regardless of how long someone parks.

The townís first municipal parking garage is adjacent to Town Hall and is in an accessible location to the festival that centers on South Main Street near Azalea Park.
