Police say her husband had reported her missing on the morning of Sept. 17 not long after, her body was found off a dirt road in rural Dorchester County.

Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers announced on Sept. 19 that Karen Yarborough’s cause of death was a gun shot to the head and the manner of death is homicide.

Summerville Police said they arrested James Stan Yarborough. He will be charged with murder, obstruction of justice and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

In bond court the suspect was given a $25,000 bond for the obstruction charge and a $50,000 bond for the weapons charge.

A circuit court judge will set bond on the murder charge, that hearing should happen within a few weeks.

On the morning of Sept. 17, Summerville police officers were dispatched to 419 Waring Street to investigate a missing person. James Yarborough reported that his wife had been missing since the prior evening.

During the investigation, a deceased female was located in the unincorporated portion of Dorchester County off Harrison Road. The body was identified as 63 year old Karen Yarborough.

The case is still being investigated.

James Yarborough is the former principal of Summerville High School.

The incident report from when Yarborough called police about his wife being missing stated police found the husband watching TV when they arrived to investigate. Police also said Yarborough had blood on his shirt which he attributed to blood thinners.

Yarborough told the responding officer that he last saw his wife on the evening of Sept. 16.

Police also said they found a spent bullet in the couple’s bedroom. Police said they asked if Yar

borough owned a firearm and he replied “No.”

Police took him into custody on Sept. 17 on the obstruction charge. He was then taken to the police station for additional questing from detectives that same day.
