After more than a decade of professional practice, veterinarian Dr. Christine Eidson has opened Sweetspire Veterinary Clinic at 113C N. Magnolia St. in downtown Summerville.

Drawing from years of experience in various veterinary settings, Eidson said Sweetspire is a low-cost spay, neuter and vaccine clinic with elements of traditional practices, aiming to provide affordable preventative care to local pets.

Having spent time working at Banfield and exploring low-cost alternatives, Eidson, a graduate of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College and the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia, then ventured into relief work, contemplating various paths, including partnership, mobile services or an independent practice. The decision ultimately led to the creation of Sweetspire.

“The clinic’s primary goal is to offer low-cost preventative care to the community through walk-in wellness clinics,” she said. “These clinics will provide routine vaccinations, treat simple illnesses, conduct routine spaying and neutering and perform dental cleanings. Additionally, one day a week will be reserved for scheduled appointments where exams will be free, and clients will only pay for consultation time.”

The clinic’s approach extends to consultation times with a licensed technician, catering to pets that may be too scared, aggressive or have unique medical needs. Eidson said that personalized attention aims to create a stress-free environment for both pets and their owners.

Looking ahead, the veterinarian envisions expanding the clinic by adding more doctors who may specialize in specific areas, creating a team that caters to various needs within the pet community.

Eidson said that opening the clinic in the chosen location, a few blocks from historic downtown Summerville, was strategic.

“Recognizing a shortage of general practice clinics in that area, I identified an opportunity in a transitioning neighborhood,” she said.
