South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has recognized Dorchester County School District Two’s Scott Stevenson of Ashley Ridge High School as the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program’s Educator of the Month for December.

“Without personal finance education, our students will be unprepared to face the economic demands of the modern world,” Loftis said. “Our Financial Literacy Master Teachers empower our youth by giving them the tools they need to become financially literate adults. We are grateful to Mr. Stevenson for his work in providing the much-needed skills our students will use to navigate their world.”

Stevenson earned his Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the University of South Carolina and his Master of Business Administration from The Citadel. Before entering the field of education, Stevenson was a Regional Sales Manager with Unilever. After leaving Unilever, he was a principal in Silpro Inc., a rubber specialties manufacturing business he formed with his father and brother.

After selling the business, Stevenson participated in the Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE) and was hired as the business instructor at Givhans Alternative Program in the Dorchester School District Two. Since 2017, Stevenson has worked at Ashley Ridge High School, teaching marketing, sports and entertainment management, business finance, IBA and business entrepreneurship. Additionally, he serves as the school’s Future Business Leaders of America advisor. Stephenson has also been the Ashley Ridge High School representative to the Trident Chamber of Commerce.

“As a business teacher, I have always felt our curriculum must be about relevance,” Stevenson said. “Our students should be able to connect the dots between classroom instruction and career readiness. The content we deliver in an academic setting must provide our young people with the skill set and knowledge they need to build personal wealth and financial security. Nothing speaks to that goal more strongly than a personal, school and district commitment to personal financial literacy instruction.”

The South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides incentives to K-12 teachers who are experts in financial literacy and desire to teach professional development workshops to other educators in their schools and districts. Participating teachers can access specialized training and financial literacy curriculum resources through the program to promote better financial literacy education in K-12 schools.

Sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, and in partnership with SC Economics, this statewide financial literacy initiative aims to increase teacher support and involvement in incorporating personal finance education into the curriculum.
