Free tax filing: AARP Tax-Aide will provide free Federal and South Carolina income tax preparation and electronic filing. All volunteer counselors will be qualified in the required tax codes and methods and certified by the IRS for all typical tax situations. The Summerville site for Tax-Aide is Bethany United Methodist Church, 118 W. 3rd S. St., room 118, on the East (Main Street/17A) side of the church. Signs will be posted. Appointment times are available from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Preparation ends Monday, April 15. Happy Hearts: Bethany United Methodist Church's Happy Hearts Meeting is Friday, Feb. 23. Reservations for lunch are due by Sunday, Feb. 18. The Plantation Singers, a professional Gullah and spiritual a cappella group, are the guest performers. The Plantation Singers are renowned locally, nationally and internationally for their singing of the music of the Lowcountry. Author series: The 25th annual Timrod Author Series begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in the Fellowship Hall of Bethany United Methodist Church, 118 W. Third St. in Summerville with Brad Taylor, author of multiple New York Times bestselling books, who will introduce “Dead Man’s Hand,” the latest addition to the Pike Logan series. The event begins with a presentation by the author followed by a reception and book signing at the Timrod Library, 217 Central Ave. in Summerville. A 20-plus-year veteran in the U.S. Army, Taylor served in infantry and special forces positions, including eight years in the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta. The author lives in Charleston with his wife and two daughters. When not writing, he serves as a security consultant on asymmetric threats for various agencies.

Paleontologist: The national excitement was enormous when the first nearly complete T-rex was found in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Join paleontologist Frank DeLoach, who was at the site in South Dakota at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Seago Library in Summerville when he discusses details of the people involved in the discovery, excavation, prep work, legal entanglements and artwork of Sue, which is now on display at the Field Museum in Chicago after years of litigation and tears. The video “Dinosaur 13” records all that happened to Sue and its champions versus the federal government, who seized the dinosaur. Tools and fossils from his work in the field will also be on display. This event is appropriate for all ages.
