Za’Qari Heath is one of five seniors who have now played their final game for the Pinewood basketball team.

A pair of local teams have already been eliminated from the 2024 SCISA Basketball tournaments, while two more may just be getting started.

The Pinewood Prep Boys were edged out of the SCISA 4A Boys Tournament Saturday, Feb. 17, suffering a 53-47 loss to Trinity Collegiate in the first round. Pinewood finishes the season with a 22-11 record, while Trinity improved to 14-11 and will play Cardinal Newman in the second round Monday, Feb. 19.

Pinewood had a 36-35 lead entering the fourth quarter, but Trinity outscored the Panthers 18-11 in the closing eight minutes. Senior Michael Jones had a solid finish to his high school career, draining a team-high 19 points and grabbing five rebounds. Sophomore Jayden Alexander added 11 points for Pinewood, and freshman Tripp Eidson added seven. Senior Troy Dandridge led the team in rebounds with seven.

Lady Panthers

The Lady Panthers were eliminated Friday, Feb. 16, with a 51-37 loss to Augusta Christian in the opening round of the SCISA 4A girls' tournament. Pinewood finishes with a 3-22 record, while Augusta Christian improved to 20-8 and will face Hammond in the second round Monday, Feb. 19.

Cathedral Academy

Both the Cathedral Academy boys and girls swept their region this season to earn a buy in the first round of the SCISA Class 2A playoffs.

The Cathedral boys carry a 23-9 record into the second round Tuesday, Feb. 20, when they are scheduled to face Beaufort Academy. The Generals have won nine of their last 12 games. The losses came to Bishop England, Pinewood Prep and Porter-Gaud, which all belong to a larger SCISA classification.

The Lady Generals carry a 19-6 record into the second round. They are scheduled to play Beaufort Academy at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Northwood Academy.

Since Jan. 5, Cathedral has won 12 of 13 games. The sole loss in the months of January and February came to Northwood Academy Jan. 15. The Cathedral girls have wins over both Pinewood Prep and Porter-Gaud this season.
