The late Sherwood Miler Jr. started the business with the late Grange Cuthbert Jr. in 1972, with an office on Main Street near I-26. The business moved to Trolley Road in 1992 and is in the same location today.
Forty-six years after Miler Properties opened for business, it’s still all about family, including: Broker-in-Charge Richard “Dickie” Miler; his wife Debbie, who handles property management with their daughter, Adrian Harrington; Adrian’s husband Sean, a sales agent; his brother, agent Sherwood Miler III; his sister, agent Lucia Campbell and her son, Taylor, also an agent. Darlene Bollettino, Diane Watkins and Jennifer Laffey-Foster, all agents, round out the team.
Miler, a graduate of The Citadel, is active in projects that assist the community, serving on church, civic and nonprofit boards of directors. He has donated his time ad talents to Children in Crisis, Palmetto House homeless shelter and the Summerville Family YCMA.
Just as the company employs generations of family (and longtime loyal employees), it has served generations of families. “We love what we do. We truly see this as a ministry,” Miler said. “Not only have we made some wonderful friends, it blesses us to see people from other parts of the country fall in love with this part of the country.”
Many transplants want to rent for awhile before buying, to get a better feel for neighborhoods, schools, and amenities. While the rental market is tight and buyers will pay less per month on a mortgage than renters will spend, Miler Properties can still help with temporary housing; Miler said his wife, Debbie handles hundreds of rental properties.
Miler, a Realtor for 35 years, was selling and listing homes back when Summerville had just a handful of subdivisions. Today the firm has grown with the town, but that special family touch remains.
“Summerville is a great place with a booming economy, but we still have the heartbeat of a small town,” Miler said. “We really are a community.”
In keeping with the community atmosphere that distinguishes Summerville, “We haven’t tried to hire 30 agents,” Miler said. “We’ve tried to stay small to keep that small-town feeling.
“I’m thankful to be in a business where I meet so many wonderful people,” he added. “If you do your job right that customer becomes your friend.”
It’s not unusual for Miler Properties to help second-generation clients.
“They remember who Mom and Dad worked with in real estate, and now they call us,” he said. “It’s very rewarding. I hope I live long enough to serve three generations.”
