Small business owner and Dorchester County Councilman Con Chellis announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for South Carolina House District 94.

“I’m running to give Summerville strong leadership in Columbia. In only seven years, I have built my small business into one of Charleston’s best in its respective field. That happened through building relationships, listening, and treating people with respect – all are characteristics we need in our next state representative,” Chellis said.

Chellis was elected to Dorchester County Council in 2016. The Statehouse 94 seat is currently held by Rep. Katie Arrington, a freshman legislator who has announced she'll run for the Republican nomination in the 1st Congressional District, the seat currently held by Rep. Mark Sanford.

“We need an agenda to hold Columbia accountable. We have a road funding system that isn’t directing money to the counties that have high growth like ours; we have a school funding system that is pouring money into underperforming districts and leaving high performing districts like ours underfunded; and then, there is this fiasco with the power companies," Chellis said.

Chellis, a Summerville native, owns an insurance business on Main Street in Summerville and has previous corporate banking experience. His extensive community involvement includes founding and being past president of the Summerville High School Athletic Club, past president of the Summerville Exchange Club, and past director of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves on the board of visitors at Charleston Southern University and the board of directors for Dorchester Habitat for Humanity.

Chellis is married to his wife Tara, a fellow business owner and chiropractor. The couple and their three children live on Marion Avenue in Summerville and attend Bethany United Methodist Church.
