The driver of a semitrailer died Monday in crash with a train near Deming Way and Highway 78 in front of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office headquarters.
John David Wallace, 51, of Columbia was pronounced dead at 1:22 p.m. at Trident Regional Medical Center, according to the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office.
“The deceased will undergo an autopsy at Medical University of South Carolina,” according to a prepared statement from Coroner Paul J. Brouthers.
Information released by the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of the tractor trailer was hauling a flatbed and was crossing the tracks to get on Highway 78 when the train hit the truck in the driver’s side.
The driver was transported from the scene soon after the crash, which occurred with a such a force, the truck’s engine block was separated from the cab.
The Norfolk Southern train sat idle on the tracks for several hours after the incident Monday afternoon.
Highway 78 re-opened to all traffic late Monday, and the incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office.
