St. George Police: Custody issue prompts man to bring gun to school

St. George police said a custody issue prompted a man to bring a handgun to St. George Middle School on Friday.

Edward Hill tried to stop his ex-son-in-law from picking up Hill's grandchild from the school, according to police.

Hill was served warrants on Monday for the following charges: carrying a weapon on school property, second-degree assault and battery and disturbing schools.

Police said around 2:40 p.m. on Friday, Hill pulled in to school, striking a parked car, before exiting his own vehicle and running, with gun in hand, toward the student's father.

But the father left the property with the child before Hill could get to him, he told police. Hill then put the weapon back in his vehicle and met with school staff and the SRO to explain the custody issue, police said.

The SRO secured the weapon at the St. George Police Department, police said.

No one was injured in the incident.

Hill is scheduled to appear in bond court at 4:30 p.m. Monday inside the Town of St. George Municipal Court.
