Fort golf team advances to state championship match

The Fort Dorchester Girls Golf team has advanced to the AAAAA state championship tournament.

Fort Dorchester had the top score for Lowcountry teams competing at the 2018 South Carolina High School League Girls AAAAA Golf Lower State Championship match.

Lexington won the Lower State match Oct. 15 at Columbia Country Club with a 302 team score. St. James placed second with a 322 score and Fort Dorchester placed third with a 323 tally that topped Wando’s 340 to give the Patriots Lowcountry bragging rights. Stratford (386) placed eighth while James Island (391) placed ninth, Cane Bay (414) placed 11th, Summerville (428) placed 12th and Ashley Ridge (464) placed 15th.

The 323 score set a new school record for the Fort Dorchester Girls Golf program and qualified the Patriots for the 5A state championship match Oct. 22-23 in Prosperity, S.C. Only the Top 8 teams from the Lower State advanced to the state tournament.

“This year is the strongest the girl’s program has been top to bottom,” Fort Dorchester coach Cory Deering said. “Scores have been improving all year and that is attributed to the girls working on their part of the game that needed to be improved the most. For many of them that meant improving their putting and work around the greens. We have focused a lot of practice time on and around the putting green.”

Raven Turner led the Patriots, coming in with a plus 4 round of 76. Cece Knecht was just behind with a 79. Rounding out the scoring for Fort Dorchester were Anna Walsh (84), Katie Skipper (84) and LT LeShore (87).

Savanna Mapes led Cane Bay with a round of 93. Trailing for the Cobras were Nthanze Njonjo (102), Maddie Nelson (109), Karaline Stenzel (110) and Alisha Babin (110).

Taylor Perry led Summerville with a round of 90. Trailing for the Green Wave were McKenzie Driggers (107), Gracie Weatherford (115), Sarah Morris (116) and Alexis Weeks (126).

Fort Dorchester also claimed the Region 8-AAAAA Championship Oct. 9. The Patriots finished with a team score of 338 at the match played at Legend Oaks Golf Course. Ashley Ridge and Summerville tied for second place and West Ashley placed fourth.
