Ashley Ridge graduate Campbell Gibson was named the MVP for the South Girls All-star Team at the 2019 North-South Soccer Classic hosted by T.L. Hann High School June 22.
Gibson helped the South to a 1-1 tie with the North during the all-star match sponsored by the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association. The event is designed to feature some of the top soccer players in the state during competitive yet friendly soccer matches that pit players from the southern part of the state up against players from the northern part.
“I’ve wanted to play in that game since I was a freshman and it was a great experience,” Gibson said. “It meant a lot to get the chance to represent Ashley Ridge there.”
Gibson and Kaylee Williams of White Knoll were selected as the two captains for the 2019 South Girls All-stars. Gibson also scored the team’s sole goal during the match. River Bluff’s Sophia Monsma sent a pass across midfield to Gibson, who worked her way inside the 10-yard mark and got off a left-footed shot toward the near post. The shot found the net to put the South on the scoreboard.
“Everyone there was really good so I had to adjust to a different type and speed of play, but I enjoyed competing with players from around the state. It was a good challenge for me and now I know I can play at that level. I feel I held my own.”
As a senior at Ashley Ridge, Gibson scored more than 20 goals in 2019. Her official career statistics weren’t available at press time but she is believed to have scored close to 50 total goals during her four seasons with Ashley Ridge.
Next school year, Gibson will play for Spartanburg Methodist College.
In the boys’ all-star match, the North defeated the South 4-1. John David Benson represented Fort Dorchester in that match.
The other high school soccer all-star event that South Carolina athletes can participate in was hosted in Cary, North Carolina June 29. The Clash of the Carolinas pits all-stars from South Carolina up against all-stars from North Carolina.
The boys’ match for this year’s Clash ended in a 2-2 draw. In the girls’ match, North Carolina earned a 1-0 victory. Ashley Ridge graduate Olivia Hughes was the only Summerville-area athlete invited to participate in that all-star event.
