Green Wave racks up region golf honors

After claiming the region championship, the Green Wave Boys Golf team (L to R) AJ Martino, Caleb Keyes, Jack Robinson, Coach Wes Mitchell, Payne Rutherford, Davis Hewett and coach Ian Lenke placed four golfers and a coach on the 2019 all-region team.

Summerville claimed both of the top honors for the 2019 Region 8-AAAAA Boys Golf All-region Team.

Green Wave senior Jack Robinson has been named the Region Player of the Year for boys’ golf. With him leading the way much of the season, Summerville swept its region opponents. Summerville then came in with a 310 team score at the Region 8-AAAAA Championship to claim the region title. The next closest score was a 329.

Joining Robinson on the all-region team are Summerville senior Caleb Keys, junior Payne Rutherford and freshman AJ Martino.

Ashley Ridge senior Adam Stewart as well as Fort Dorchester’s Andy Messersmith and Vacalv Kotrbacek and West Ashley’s DJ Williamson were also named to the all-region team.

Summerville’s Wes Mitchell has been named the Region 8-AAAAA Boys Golf Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, Summerville only lost two regular-season matches, both to James Island. In early April, the Green Wave traveled to Pickens and brought home the first-place trophy for the Blue Flame Invitational Tournament.

The Green Wave placed fourth at this year’s Class AAAAA Lower State Qualifier, which is the highest the team has placed in several years. It placed 12th at the 5A state-championship match, which is one place higher than it placed there in 2018.
