Hughes selected for all-state, all-star honors

Ashley Ridge center-back defender Olivia Hughes was selected for all-state honors and will participate in the 2019 Clash of the Carolinas all-star soccer event this summer.

Ashley Ridge defender Olivia Hughes has been selected for a pair of high honors.

Hughes, a 2019 AR graduate, has been selected to participate in the 2019 Clash of the Carolinas all-star soccer event scheduled for June 29 at WakeMed Soccer Park’s Koka Booth Stadium in Cary, North Carolina. The event is billed as the nation’s only interstate prep soccer all-star event.

Founded in 2007, the Clash of the Carolinas annually pits the top boys and girls graduated seniors from South Carolina up against the top graduated seniors from North Carolina in two matches. The girls match is scheduled for 10 a.m. and will be followed by the boys match scheduled tentatively for noon.

This year’s South Carolina team will be coached by Josef Lorenz of Dorman High and Sheila Wyer of Southside Christian. Ashley Ridge coach Mark Weaver says Hughes will be a great asset to their squad.

“She is just a natural defender and we were fortunate to have her the past four years,” Weaver said. “We were organized in the back because she took care of that for us. She has a strong leg and is consistent with her long kicks in regards to placing them where she wants them, either near post or far post. Plus she is just a great student both in the classroom and outside the classroom.”

Hughes, Wando forward Samanthan Meredith and Academic Magnet forward Riane Coman are the only three Lowcountry players on the 2019 South Carolina Girls roster. Coaches selected a total of 18 athletes for this year’s all-star team.

Hughes has also been named to the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association 2019 Class AAAAA All-state Team. Players from all grade levels are eligible for this honor. This year, coaches selected 22 players for the team.

Hughes, Wando forward Samantha Meredith and Wando goalkeeper Maggie Van Thullenar are the only three Lowcountry athletes to make the squad.

Next school year, Hughes will play for the Wofford College Women’s Soccer program.
