5K to raise money for AR athlete injured in auto collision

Brent Rightler is undergoing physical therapy due to injuries he sustained during an auto collision.

Legend Oaks Golf and Tennis Club officials are asking the community to come out and support Brent Rightler in his efforts to overcome injuries he sustained in a March 7 auto collision.

The inaugural Step by Step Together for Brent Back Nine 5K and 1 Mile Kids Fun Run will be hosted by Legend Oaks Gives Back Sept. 28. The 5K race/walk will begin at 7:45 a.m. and the Fun Run is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. The timed USATF Certified 5K course will wind through the back nine golf holes at Legend Oaks.

The event is a fundraiser for Rightler, 16, who is an Ashley Ridge High School junior. Prior to the auto collision, which left him a paraplegic, Rightler participated in wrestling, football and tennis for the Swamp Foxes. He also loves to fish and his passion is auto mechanics.

His mother, Amy, says her son has worked hard at physical therapy in an attempt to overcome his numerous injuries and doctors have been amazed at his progress.

“Our goal is to keep Brent’s muscles strong and his heart and bones healthy.” she said. “We know a cure is possible in his lifetime and we want him to be ready when it happens. The best way we can accomplish this is to provide him with a Functional Electrical Stimulation Cycle to use for daily home physical therapy. Unfortunately, this is not something that insurance companies pay for.”

Money raised through the Step by Step Together for Brent Back Nine races will go toward the cost for that medical equipment, which event organizers estimate costs just more than $26,000.

Runners, walkers, sponsors, volunteers and donations are needed for the event. For complete information, go to the www.legendoaksgolf.com home page click on the “Step by Step Together for Brent” logo.

Registration is $35 for the 5K and $15 for the Fun Run. After Sept. 13, a $5 late registration fee will be added. Participants can register through the day of the event.
