The North Charleston Dixie Softball Angels (10U) Traditional All-Stars clinched a district championship June 27.
North Charleston defeated Goose Creek 13-5 in the district championship game at Felkel Field. As the district champion, North Charleston will advance to the South Carolina Dixie Softball Angels Traditional All-Stars tournament scheduled to begin July 12 in Moncks Corner. Team officials say this is the first time a North Charleston softball team has made it into the state tournament.
“These girls are dedicated,” North Charleston Manager Joe Brinson said. “We have some first-year players on the team, but they learned from the start and everyone on this team has been 100 percent dedicated from the very first pitch. They were focused and played great. We also had great support from the parents and the city.”
North Charleston opened the tournament with a win over Hanahan June 24 and defeated Goose Creek the next day. Goose Creek bounced back to defeat Hanahan June 26 to set up the championship series with North Charleston, but had to defeat North Charleston twice in order to avoid elimination.
The next evening, North Charleston and Goose Creek were tied after two innings. Then North Charleston began to pull away, scoring 3 runs in the third and 6 in the fourth.
North Charleston pitcher Lennea Morlando struck out 12 batters during five innings in the circle on her way to earning the pitching win.
Outfielder Kylie Arenas led North Charleston at the plate, going 2 for 3 at bat with a walk and two RBIs. Janiyah Ray, Abbey Mitchell, Morgan Carter, Lily Brinson and Adyson Safaie also reached base three times from North Charleston. Carter had three RBIs while Ray and Mitchell had two RBIs each. Ray also scored three runs, including one off her inside-the-park home run that led off the bottom of the third.
Morlando, Alyssa Owens, Ezrina Casson and Peyton Smith all reached base twice. Alana Gibson and Arianna Perry also made contributions for North Charleston during the championship game.
Chloe Braun led the Goose Creek All-Stars at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a walk and three RBIs. Kinsley Bass, Peighton Demumbreum, MaeMae Alexander and Makenzie Herzog all reached base twice for Goose Creek.
Brinson and assistant coaches Floyd Mitchell and Richard Smith are hoping to claim North Charleston’s first Dixie Softball State Championship trophy later this month, but know they will have to top some good teams in order to hoist the prize.
“Hitting will be the key for us,” Brinson said. “We will face some fast pitchers there so we have to get our top-speed timing down in practice.”
