Pinewood Preparatory School alumnus Josh Byrd is returning to his alma mater to head up the school’s varsity girls’ and boys’ tennis programs.
Byrd, a 2013 Pinewood graduate, was a two-year letterman on the school’s varsity tennis team. Upon graduating Pinewood, he attended Charleston Southern University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Middle School Education. Byrd was an undergraduate assistant to former CSU women’s tennis coach Mike Baker during his time at the university.
Byrd’s love for tennis led him to a career in coaching. His six years as a coach include stops at Pine Forest Country Club, Legend Oaks Golf & Tennis Club, Ashley Ridge High School, and Creekside Tennis and Swim Club. He is a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Certified Tennis Professional.
“Josh is a great young coach who we are thrilled to have back home here at Pinewood,” Pinewood Athletic Director Andy Morgan said. “We are excited to bring him on as a part of our athletic coaching staff and couldn’t be happier to have an alumnus leading our tennis program. Josh understands the Pinewood way and the expectations we have of our coaches and the student-athletes they lead. He will be a great addition and will continue on the success of our tennis teams.”
Byrd has experienced success coaching all ages from juniors to adults. In 2016, he led an 18U Junior Team Tennis (JTT) team to Nationals, where they placed 11th in the nation. In 2018, his 18U JTT team finished as state champions. He currently plays in local United States Tennis Association leagues and tournaments.
“Pinewood has always been my second home and to have the opportunity to lead the tennis program is incredible,” Byrd said of his new coaching opportunity. “I want to thank Coach Morgan and Mr. Seiden for this amazing opportunity. Pinewood tennis has a great legacy and I intend to continue that legacy. Our goal is to compete for state championships and that is exactly what we will do.”
