Green Wave looks to bounce back during home opener

Senior running back Derrion Larry had some big runs for Summerville Aug. 30, but the Green Wave still fell to Wando.

The Green Wave Football team will host the Gators for its 2019 home opener.

Summerville will face Goose Creek at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Memorial Stadium. Both teams are coming off a loss. The Green Wave (1-1) fell 32-20 at Wando Aug. 30. The Gators (0-1) had a bye week to stew over a 21-20 loss to Ashley Ridge Aug. 23.

Last year, Summerville rolled to a 34-0 victory over Goose Creek. Summerville lost some of the key players from that shutout, but does still have many of the offensive weapons that shinned in the victory. Receiver Brody Hopkins had two touchdown receptions in the game so he and Summerville’s two returning running backs are definitely on the Gators radar screen.

Some speculate Goose Creek has improved considerably since last season, when the Gators finished with a 4-6 record. That was the first season for Goose Creek under the guidance of head coach Jason Winstead, who before coming to the Lowcountry helped South Pointe claim multiple state championships as a defensive coordinator.

Defensively, the Gators return their back seven from last season and that group is expected to be strong. During Goose Creek’s 2019 home opener, returning wide out Damon Mouzon had a pair of TD receptions, connecting first with QB Emmanuel Mukuamu and later with backup QB/receiver DJ Matthews.

The Green Wave offense rolled during its season-opening victory at Woodland Aug. 23, but struggled at times during Week 1 at Wando. Senior running back Derrion Larry had multiple TD runs during the loss, but the Wave turned the ball over on two interceptions and a fumble.

The Wando offense passed for approximately 250 yards and three touchdowns.
