Summerville High School junior Daren Hinds captured his second straight Race for the ARK victory Aug. 24.

The Green Wave cross country and track athlete won the 20th annual Ark Alzheimer’s Family Support Services Race for the ARK 5K, crossing the finish line in 16 minutes, 20 seconds. The runner shaved 53 seconds off the time that won him the race last summer.

For most high school cross country programs in the area, the Race for the ARK serves as the first team event of the season. At the same time, it offers high-school athletes the chance to compete against runners of all ages so it serves as a good litmus test.

“I would like to get into the 15s this year and hopefully with God by myside I will be able to do that,” Hinds said. “I’m a pretty social person so this race is fun. It’s a chance to get to know more people and it pushes me to improve. It’s really good to see older people out her running so I like coming out here for the Ark.”

Green Wave runners claimed six of the Overall Top 10 finishes for this year’s 5K race to place first in the boys’ youth team challenge. Summerville also won the girls’ youth team challenge.

“I’m really proud of my team,” Hinds said. “We are really putting in the hard work and effort and I think today shows our work ethic. We are a team that shouldn’t be underestimated because we want to see how far we can go.”

Rounding out the Overall Top 10 for the race were Noah Woodbury (16:36), Owen Smith (17:00), Zane Kiger (17:00), Gabriel Carnagey (17:51), Isaac Cinnamon (18:00), Jeremiah Eddy (18:07), Xavier Massara (18:22), Brandon Clark (18:31) and Ryan Duffy (18:32).

Hannah Moldenhauer of Charleston repeated as the Female Overall winner, also placing first in the Female 25-29 division. She finished the 5K in 19:27, compared to her 2018 winning time of 19:55.

Summerville’s Alicyne Marley was the second female across the finish line. Her 19:54 finish earned her first place in the Female 30-34 division. Rounding out the Overall Female Top 10 were Sandy O’Keefe (20:15), Kerry Robinson (20:34), Brianna Dooney (21:04), Milaya Buchanan (21:30), Melissa Cunningham (21:40), Elin Fields (21:51), Mary Bostick (21:54) and Sydney Greer (21:54).

Each year the event, which also features a one-mile fun run, offers people a unique and easy way to support the services The Ark Alzheimer’s Family Support Services provides to those living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia and the caregivers providing for them.
