The Patriots Volleyball team picked up its first win of the young season Sept. 10.

Fort Dorchester defeated Berkeley 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 in North Charleston to give first-year Patriots Volleyball coach Kayla Branton her first win with the program. Branton, a Windsor Hill Elementary School teacher, played volleyball for Summerville. She was also a member of the Green Wave Softball team that finished as the Class AAAA state runner-up in 2013, her senior year.

Branton took over a team that is having to replace several key members who graduated last year. The Patriots do have a handful of seniors to provide leadership, but are also counting on some young players.

“We have a lot of new girls who we can coach up so we’re excited about the next few years,” Branton said. “We tend to play up to our competition’s level. We kind of matched them tonight and played a little better.”

Members of this year’s varsity squad include Lydia Schulz, Mia Manuel, Caroline Carter, Lilly Sengvilay, Lydia Alford, Kenzie Higgins, Haley Johnson, Aviana Jackson, Noelle Smits, Anika Henneman, Allie Fairey and Jazlynn Julio.

“Things are going well,” Branton said. “They are playing well together and keeping our communication up so right now I think we need to work on coverage and making the passes so we can get those good hits.”
