SHS to host girls’ basketball jamboree

Summerville High School will host a girls’ basketball jamboree Nov. 19.

Coach Calvin Davis is bringing a Cross High School tradition to Summerville.

Davis, a former Cross Girls Basketball coach who this summer was hired to coach the Green Wave Girls, has organized a girls’ basketball preseason jamboree. It’s something he did in his years at Cross and he didn’t want to see the event end just because he changed jobs.

“This is a chance for people to see some of the best girls’ basketball teams in the area at one place early on,” Davis said. “It used to draw a lot of excitement and pack the gym at Cross so I’m hoping that will happen here.”

The jamboree is scheduled for Nov. 19 at Summerville High School and will feature 16 teams. Each team will play a 16-minute scrimmage. Tipoff for the first scrimmage is at 2 p.m. The Summerville girls will take on Lake Marion for the final scrimmage, scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Tickets are $7 at the door and are good for all scrimmages. This year, Davis is using the jamboree as a fundraiser for the Lowcountry Food Bank so all teams participating will bring donations for the food bank.

Other teams participating include Fort Dorchester, Cane Bay, Porter-Gaud, C.E. Murray, Cross, Baptist Hill, James Island, Goose Creek, Berkeley, Stratford, St. John’s, Manning, Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Kingstree.
